The perfect spot
« on: April 10, 2011, 09:52:05 am »

Hi all !

It took me something like 15 hours to manage to create (my) perfect map spot, so i thought i would share it with you !

I don't know if it is the right place to do this, so feel free to move my topic in the right category if necessary !

Please add a comment if you like it ! I would be really pleased to see a savegame of your fortress after a few years :)

Map features :
  • A volcano
  • A river + the river source (we are in the moutains)
  • A green valley, even in winter (it means while the mountain is snowy, some parts of the river rarely freeze, pretty cool, huh ?)
  • Flux Stone (a lot of it)
  • A lot of different metals and gems
  • Nice, open caverns (not a stupid maze like in default world-gen)
  • At least 15 layers before the first cavern
  • A montain to go up
  • A nice terrain to explore, hunt and make fortifications and towers
  • A LOT of biomes : Calm, Joyously wild, Sinister, Haunted, Terrifying which means Good & Evil at the same place, and a lot of savagery
  • All neighbors are ok, and no war with the elves
  • A powerful dwarf civilization : "The Crazy Works" (no bituminous coal, but they have lignite and coke)
  • A demonic fortress on my map to have a lot of fun in the underground (having this one + the rest was a pain in the ass)
  • A lot of raw adamantine near HFS
  • A 5*5 spot at MAX to avoid performance issues (still runs at 150 FPS on my laptop for a few days of playing, so it's ok)
  • A balanced climate
  • 1500 embark points to counter-balance the relatively wild biomes here.

It lacks bituminous coal, but with trees and a volcano it should'nt be a problem.

Behold ! Here is my gift to the dwarven gods of blood : a nice world map, (and not an initial save) to let you customize your embark preferences !

DOWNLOAD LINK HERE : http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=4179

You can easily find the spot using this screenshot :

Now, here is a list of the 5 AWESOME biomes involved here :

And last but not least, a giant screenshot of the ground area in summer :

It would be lovely if dfprospector would organize its output someday, but until then, here's the sorted version of that output for anyone else who wants to see it.

The upshot of this all is that you have everything one could want except for bismuth, platinum, aluminum, nickel, gypsum & some type of coal, which is pretty dang awesome, all things considered.  Those things are usually rather easy to import in reasonable quantities (assuming the civ has access to them?) and the easy magma makes the lack of coal or lignite no big deal.

Yep that's the main drawback, but it was the only way i could get the 5 biomes and the volcano !

On my C2Duo laptop, game is still at 150 FPS a few hours after embark, when a 16*16 embark drops immediatly at 1 FPS. So i guess it has less influence than the number of dwarves or the blood they have on them, but i'm not really sure if 5*5 will make game lag after game start ?

I just started this quest myself, and thought I had failed miserably when I couldn't see any igneous extrusive or sedimentary.

Then I looked at my 15 z-level high riverbeds in the corner. Now all I need is to bump it up by two more biomes, and I'll be where yours is. I think the secret to it all really lies in the mesh ratios being really high, and a low erosion rate.

You end up having some insane z-level differences, but the trade off is that they aren't gradually changing so much that you can't fit them all into a 4x4.

It would be nice to see the output of DF Prospector (and be sure to have it show layer stones!)

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.
