dont worry about idlers.. after a few invasions your dwarfs will be too busy picking up clothes/armor to do anything else.

I make the first six to ten dwarves I don't know what to do with into engravers, and smooth out the fortress. Then masons for above-ground constructions, once I've got a manager so I can keep the newb masons away from the workshop. Then, I usually get some idea of what the fort's going to produce a lot of, and I get new dwarves involved in that. Finally, there's always the draft.

Is it just me or do idle dwarves bring down fps? I remember once everyone was idle and fps was like 30 but when I knocked down a wall and ordered all the stone dumped, fps went to 50 as all my dwarves got to work.
