I notice that both Carpenter Brut and Perturbator are French.  Must be a strong regional scene, sort of like progressive metal in Northern Europe.

Yeah, there are a lot of really good French artists in electronic music somehow.

Billy's back, with some choice night driving 80's reverb'n'beat~
I like it.  Dark, and I know it from somewhere...

...Can't quite place it, but I like it.

Flushed nonsense aside, I'd like to plug Simon Swerwer again.  If there's a better maestro of DF-themed music, I'd love to hear it!
That first track Sounds of Saltfork is a very fine intro.
https://soundcloud.com/simonswerwer/sets/dwarf-fortress-soundtrack-2014
They're all folky, but the above captures that simply.

My favorite is...  The relatively slow, simple chant of dwarves striking the earth.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yevuBKVIBDo
Simple tastes, me.

But also the tragic story of The Teal Metal Of The Creators (translation from Dw: Adamantine)

(surprising nobody, I also still love The Tankard Basher)

The more I dig into Synthwave, the more it seems like something that simmered for a few years, then suddenly exploded fantastically in size and creativity of its community somewhere in 2015/2016.

There is so much worth listening to, but almost all of it released 2016-2017.  Never seen anything like it.

Portugal. The Man. won a Grammy award for their 2017 song Feel It Still.

Here's a private gig (with a little interview at the end) they did late 2017 for the journalists and redactors of the Volkskrant:
https://youtu.be/R90JOpgwppU

That name though. Why would a US band call themselves an anthropomorphized and excessively interpuncted foreign country, I do wonder.

Found another great Synthwave album.  By an artist no one has mentioned thus far - Fixions.  Love the cover art, too.

Another good synthy band I've found recenty is GUNSHIP, Technoir in particular comes with a really cool music video as well :D
Hoo, that's not only some good claymation, it went in a direction I really wasn't expecting.  Loved all the well-cited references, and it reminded me of how a child of the 80's might have imagined magic, at one point.  So long ago.  (Much like Money for Nothing, which a friend ironically just shared)

I still prefer the cyberpunk counterculture of Revel In Your Time.  I also like the tragic Fly For Your Life... Though I do prefer the Paths of Hate take on the same music video.

Mostly reposts, but just wanted to chime in to support Gunship again.  And also, I appreciate the recommendation of Carpenter Brut...  Good stuff along similar lines!

Driving for Uber lastnight.  Picked up a group of people from a country music venue.  They ask me about my taste in music.  I give them my typical spiel about "weird stuff" and they insist I play something.  I tell them I recently discovered Synthwave, and am really into it.  Play Perturbator - Birth of the New Model for them.  Surprisingly get a really good response and it turns out to be a fun trip.  Obnoxious drunk people, but in a fun and positive way.  One of the guys exclaims "This music makes me want to pick stuff up and... and... put it down again!  I'm so pumped up!"  Told them to check out NewRetroWave on youtube, and I think they might actually do so.
