Tired of boring embarks
« on: April 22, 2011, 02:02:54 am »

I love dwarf fort, I love almost everything about it. But one thing drives me mad. BORING EMBARK POINTS. I generate tons of maps until i get ones with tons of purple/ haunted/ terrifying places (I'm color blind so they may not actually be purple to the rest of you). But when I get there.....There isn't any thing fun at all...

Do any of you have some maps that are mostly evil or have devious things/ inhabitants of some good embark points? Please let me know and send them to me.

In the advanced map generator settings, is there a setting that lets you crank up the evil?

One way to find some nice places are to grab an adventurer or 2 and explore the map. I've found some pretty cool places that way that looked boring as hell from the embark view.

Try mods? For example FD (link in signature) with multiple agressive races.

Try out the PerfectWorldDF

It lets you make worlds that will suit your needs. You also can set where you want and how many evil/good biomes  there are going to be .

Buzzards and vultures are more amusing than many evil creatures.

But still, it's quite repetitive after a while. No sudden outbursts, mixed critters nor stuff able to spawn inside the fortress (i.e. slimes).

To make a map have alot of evil just make a custom one with custom parameters. Use one of the Large Region/Island or whatever you like. I just use pocket. Copy the map you want, rename it ("t"), and press "d" (I think) to change the parameters. All of it probably won't make sense if you never used this. What you want to look for is something like "Number of Evil Small Subregions", "Number of Evil Medium Subregions, "Number of Large Evil Subregions". Play around with that by making those numbers bigger. You need to find the right balance that will let your world be covered with evil but at the same time let other civilizations exist. Humans, Dwarfs, and Elves can't exist if all Hills+Grasslands, Mountains, and Forest are evil.

Another thing you'll want to do is increase the number of titans. I set it to 1000 and set all titan attack requirements to None so they come whenever they feel like it. Increase the number of Mega and Semi Beasts too. Increase the number of natural caves (mountain and non mountain) so that they have lairs in your embark sites. I don't touch the number of demon types and night monster types. For some reason that lags up my comp. Set "Reveal all Caves" (or is it "Reveal all Lairs") to yes if you want to see exactly where these monsters live on the embark map.

Have fun with a Titan sitting right next to your wagon the moment you load the game.

I'm currently on an awesome embark with a +20 z level mountain with a volcano in it, in the middle of a freezing tundra, no evil though, just goblins and the eventual polar bear. I could get the seed if I knew how.

I guess I can make you a map with all the things I described. Not large though, that freezes my old comp. Medium instead.
Have you tried the evil swamp on the wiki here?

Ok, here's the world I made. The land of Gorging. About half of it is all evil.
