Dwarf Fortress VS. Minecraft
« on: May 05, 2011, 06:46:40 pm »

So one day me and my bro were arguing about which one was better. I thought that DF kicked minecrafts ass, while my bro thought the opposite. So, I was thinking what are your thoughts? Post and vote in the poll about what you think! Also, no "But it has a mod to do that!" because that's how my bro countered all my arguments. So this is vanilla, no skins or mods, just how you get the game. I'm not posting this in the Minecraft forums 'cause almost everybody would say "What's dwarffortresss?", which would be annoying, to say the least.

Both are good at what they do and trying to compare them ends in total war.  Such has been the experience for the forums.

Yes, that's why I posted this thread. ;)

Apples to Oranges
Dwarf fortress was one of the inspiring factors for minecraft, both are about building, both are in development, both are sandboxes, both are awesome. Besides, the thread isn't about how they are the same or diffrent, just which is better. So go on, compare those damn oranges and apples.

Didn't we just have this exact same topic a week ago?  And another one the week before that?

Great thinking to post this here.

If you are lucky, you can derive an inductive proof for Dwarf Fortress Players on THE Dwarf Fortress Forum liking Dwarf Fortress.

Yeah, and I think that was the same thread that got derailed into a discussion of awful TV ads somehow.

I get the point.  >:( So instead of actually trying to compare the games or bring up problems with both games, you just want to say, "Oh, hey guys lets sink this thread with useless posts of "this sucks"!" Really?

You hit a touchy subject, what can I say?

We don't like it when people compare the two games.  The only real similarities they have are their blockiness and focus on building.  Other than that, they're really not comparable in any way.

Plus we get tons of these threads all over the place.  You just don't notice because they're sunk before they turn into a flame war.

The issue is:

Urist McForumposter cancels discussion: Dead horse already beaten.

But since you are obviously not happy with such answers, I'll throw in my .02 cents: Both games are fun, for different reasons, and I see no reason why anyone should have to pick between one or the other. Video games don't require blind loyalty or exclusivity, when neither requires real-time scheduling for in-game activities.

What do you mean you're not going to put as much effort and thought into re-discussing something that has been talked about to death dozens of times already?  If you're not going to have a proper discussion for his amusement, what's the point of him even posting a redundant. low-content thread?

We did compare the games, for several dozen pages worth of posts. In several other threads. And one of them turned into a bit of a flame skirmish before the OP abruptly locked it after a few months. But I see your point, so here's my opinion:

As a gamer, I consider them different games for different moods. Minecraft is a first-person building game that can easily sate my occasional engineering-lust with all sorts of mechanical blocks to screw around with, and spelunking is incredibly fun when you've got a big cavern to explore. DF has a much slower pace, and focuses more on managing simulated outposts (RTS style) and interacting with your randomly generated world. It lacks the instant gratification and accessibility of Minecraft, but makes up for it with an incredibly diverse and detailed world with infinite gameplay possibilities. I enjoy them both, and don't really need to declare one "better" than the other to do so.

As a game designer, Dwarf Fortress is infinitely more fascinating to me. Just observing the complex simulated game world, as well as thinking about the features yet to come, is just as fun as playing the game itself. I just don't get that with Minecraft.

Sorry for shooting you down like that, it's just that threads like this are what give this forum a reputation for calling out any game remotely similar to DF as a "ripoff". Though that's obviously not what you're doing.

I think they're both great. However, I find that having played both quite a bit, Dwarf Fortress has held my attention for longer. Minecraft just seems emptier after a while. Maybe once there are big increases in the sheer amount of gameplay I'll switch over to Minecraft again. The next update for Minecraft is maps; the next update for DF is whole cities. Wolves? M'kay, whatevs. This is not an objective assessment of course, nor is such possible, and if maps make you cream your pants it's all good with me. It's certainly pretty cool all around.
