Why is this thread still here? I thought it was established that either they're both great, or you can't compare them...

It's not that big of a deal. If everyone wants to come in and say what game they like more and why, they're allowed to. It doesn't matter how asinine the act of comparing two completely separate games is.

Fun fact: Minecraft was only inspired by DF in-part. The other two games I recall were Rollercoaster Tycoon, and Infiniminer, with infiniminer being one of the deciding factors in Notch going with a first-person creation game instead of a more graphical but simple DF-like game.

In other words, you guys might as well be comparing Minecraft to RCT, and it'd be a more valid comparison to put it up against Infiniminer, which is much closer to Minecraft in some styles than DF but still a very different game.

The truth is that both games offer creative and logical outlets in different ways that often appeal to different types of people. If you can reduce your expectations in some ways for one game, they can be met in many new ways in the other game. I play both very often. They're both bloody genius and I'm really excited to see where they're both going. People make the most half-assed judgments about both games and both developers and it's just dumbfounding to see what kind of misinformation people are willing to propagate without making sure they're telling the whole story.

You don't have to like both games, but no one should abstain from giving one of them a real try over some awfully-misplaced sense of competition between the two. Notch loves Tarn Adams for his work on DF (he has said this himself) and he isn't even trying to make a game like DF. Minecraft is its own creation with its own merits. So is DF. Stop comparing them competitively.

And to the people who won't even give Minecraft a real shot, don't be afraid of something just because it appeals to a large group of people or looks simple on the surface. There are aspects of Minecraft that will surprise you if you put a little effort into finding them.

Minecraft is much more casual and fun to play. Dwarf Fortress is much more hardcore and rewarding. I am lazy and play Minecraft much more, but that's mainly because I have no discipline with the games I play...

Minecraft and DF have...nothing to do with each other, beyond the very very loose connection that you make things. I mean, you're better comparing sim city to df then minecraft.

Both great games in their own right. Dwarf Fortress stands alone. It's so impressive you cannot describe it all in a sentence. I don't know how to describe all the advances in egalitarian shifts to occupation specialization, psychology of NPC's, community development, emulated physics, mechanisms, entirely random and personal histories, languages, lands, and worlds. It's just sexy. I'm an anthropologist and nearly orgasm every time I have my dwarves throw their ancestors off their green glass lighthouse so their wooden coffins can carry them into the ocean. Maybe TMI.

Minecraft was inspired by DF, but has forged significantly ahead in the economic sector. I'm sure Toady has no issues with it existing other than hoping people donate more to DF so they can keep him alive. However, he SHOULD be charging for DF. It's admirable he isn't, but he should take note. The money minecraft has raked in is promising. We're talking about a non-advertised, independently released BETA that's made over 30 million USD. That is gross mind you; paypal and taxes are hefty but who really cares at that point. The last time I remember a game doing something profitable without advertising was Deer Hunter (late 90's?).

DF would need some tooling. An integrated season-play game mode. Multiple official tilesets, yada yada. Overall polish that doesn't interest the rest of us hardcore. However if an incomplete Beta can make 30 million, what do you think Toady's alpha can garner? Especially with "The Game that inspired Minecraft" as its tagline.

Its like comparing apples and oranges, like if Dwarf Fortress was the perfectly clean apple and Minecraft was the half eaten orange.

There's no poll there. The comparison will be imperfect.
But both the people who have posted so far have been in in DF's favor.

Other problem is only people who have played DF are really going to be able to post, and the degree of difficulty on minecraft is slightly differnt to DF
