Resource acquisition in Minecraft is about as interesting as watching paint dry. In DF, I can assign 10 guys to do it and use designations that will keep them busy for months.

This factor alone thrusts DF into the stratosphere while Minecraft is trying to get airborne.

I find it funny that the people over at minecraft are comparing the game more and shutting down people who say, "to diffrent, can't compare".
In the words of Simpa over at the minecraft forums.
But their not being compared. Your not saying "This is better with dwarf fortress, this with minecraft". Just simply which is better. More entertaining and long lasting.

I think if one were to try and get a thread like this by they should compare specific aspects of each game, and determine from a culmination of the results which is better overall.

For instance, I personally feel that Dwarf Fortress's geography frankly floors Minecraft's. Volcanoes, proper mountain ranges, swamps and deserts abound logically. Weather systems and volcanic activity combine to create logical, sensible and maneuverable terrain.

In Minecraft, however, everything is random. You could walk in a desert one moment and, for no discernable reason, a tundra the next. I blame this on Minecraft's infinite mapping system... and in fact believe that if Notch were to have focused on making huge, limited maps as opposed to infinite maps things would be a LOT more interesting in Minecraft. Sensible terrain generation can only be acquired if the world in which the terrain is generated is, itself, sensible.

I wouldn't call myself biased on the matter of Minecraft vs. Dwarf Fortress, being one of the folks who paid for it. But my opinion comes down to this simple philosophy:

If Dwarf Fortress in its current state had the same 3D perspective, gameplay orientation, etc. as Minecraft, it would be better in literally every conceivable way. Everything MC does, DF does better.

Although I admit the music in Minecraft is pretty nice. And I have a soft spot for the floating islands theme (which could never work with DF physics)

DF has a harder learning curve, its omnipotent and not first person, and its its layered 3D and not full 3D.

So if you were to ask me I would say minecraft is more accessible to people than Dwarf Fortress, even with the fee to buy it.

But really, this is like comparing The Sims to Second Life, and doesn't need as much discussion as it gets.

They are definitely too different to make a simple, universally applicable comparison, however people can still have an opinion. For example, I prefer oranges to apples, but there is no objective way to show that oranges are better.

Anyway, I've got both (paid for minecraft) and I enjoy them both, but I have to say I think DF is a much more satisfying and enjoyable game overall. In single player mode DF wins hands-down. Frankly I can't think of a single aspect of single player minecraft I prefer over DF, including the graphics since 3D graphics on that scale lag my laptop.

Multiplayer is the one redeeming feature of minecraft, but the community more than ruins that. Constant cries of "OMG GREEFERZ GONNA BLOW UP MAH CITIEZ!!!" all over the forums/in-game chat just get tiresome. I've found a couple of good free-for-all PVP servers, but even those get boring after a while. I've been playing minecraft during exams because it's easier to only play for an hour or two then quit, but now that exams are over I think I'll be playing DF 95% of the time. Fortunately the learning curve of DF keeps the more immature players out (read: 90% of the MC community).

Oh, and minecraft also costs money, and hence the developers are running it for profit rather for the players (yes, there is a huge difference). I plan on donating considerably more to Toady than I paid for minecraft.
