Have you tried without a grapple recently?  It can actually be rather fun to spelunk through caverns with just a handful of dirt to save your life!  Chasms become a rightful challenge as well.

Wooden platforms are great for this. My first few caves actually end up looking like mineshafts with ladders up the wall and rickety unsafe-looking scaffolding all over the place.

I think I meant that more in the sense of having them reach from the very bottom of the map to the very top.
