Fortress Recorder : Does such a Utility exist?
« on: May 20, 2011, 08:07:46 pm »

I be no coder, so I'm asking...

Is there anyway to record everything that happens in DF so that a game could be "replayed" later so you could watch what happened in places you weren't paying attention to before?  So you could basically play a game, and then go back and and watch specific Dwarves as they went about their jobs in the fort?

Well, you could make a video of a certain area in the fort with '';" but then you would have to focus on a certain part. It's not really what you're looking for.
So I guess not.

I assume you are thinking of StarCraft (or any RTS, really) style replays?

... and you thought your save file was huge already.

IF you have enough Hard-drive, use the program Fraps. Many Let's Plays videos are done with this.

DF is way too random to do a true "replay mode", so videos or screenshots is probably going to be the only you can get something going, unless you work on a way to do frequent game-saves or export data.

Theoretically, you could take periodic snapshots of the game's memory and save them for later playback; the tricky bit would be doing it without killing your FPS and/or hard drive.
