Requesting a map type. Cliffside Volcano or Flat Volcano
« on: May 24, 2011, 12:08:02 am »

I've been trying to get back into DF again after a few month long hiatus and I've spent the better part of 8 hours trying to gen a world with either:

A volcano near a canyon with a river. (As in the volcano mouth is near-ish to the river, or in the cliff-side)
or
A volcano without a steep rise in elevation, with or without a river

Flux would be nice in either case, but not strictly necessary. Savage/Evil would be ideal. Vegetation and temperature doesn't matter.

If anyone knows of an embark with these details I would greatly appreciate it. Or if you know certain parameters in the PerfectWorld tool that would help generate this, it would be appreciated too.

You should check out the world gen cookbook thread. I think river side volcanoes are tough, but I've made plenty of volcano embarks just by increasing volcanism and minimum volcanoes, you can do the same for savagery/evil. I posted four volcano embarks at least on with a smidgeon of river and potential for more, all in the world gencookbook. Have "fun" and also regular fun!

My current fortress is built on a flat volcano.

First ramp up the minimum volcano number. You want at least 100's. Then just enter a very low elevation X- and Y-variances. If you don't have too much mountains or hills, most of the volcanoes in flatland will be mountain-shaped, but some will be flat.

Maybe ramp up erosion as well.

I've got a fort right now with a volcano right near a river source. All I did was simply crank up the number of volcanoes in world gen.

No flux though, though there's no need because all I've got is Native Copper and Tetrahedrite.

These worldgen settings I created last week generated some spots that are pretty much what you wanted (volcano with a river nearby)

It generates a patchwork-like map with a lot of different biomes so you will very likely find a spot that is in savage/evil biome. I set the minimum amount of volcanoes and the amount of civilizations quite high so you may initially get many rejects, it did generate a functioning map for me eventually though.

It does have some downsides. For example, there is no flux stone to be found pretty much anywhere on the map.  If you know some ways how these settings could be improved I would be happy to know.
I can post the exact seed I'm playing with if you need it.

This gens a world that tends to have flat volcanoes. The site I indicate is kinda odd, in that the volcano itself is flat, but it has some neat cubic mountains next to it (that's where the surface flux is). No river, sadly, but there's hematite and lots of trees for charcoal.

And the embark location is here (I've no idea why it's not showing the blinky X's. If anyone knows how to cap them in a screen shot I'd be appreciative). On the World Map, it's the purple mountain in the first column, in the region map, it's where the abandoned settlement is.

If you use it, make sure to choose "The Furnaces of Channeling" as your civ, the other dwarf civ is dead.

you might find what you want here:

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=64032.msg2264011#msg2264011

it even has something that kind of looks like boatmurdered, no river but a nicely acessible volcano.

For something a little wonky, I posted an embark in the cookbook thread that has a volcano within a lake. Once the caldera has obsidianized over, the magma is only a few z-levels down. The site has pretty much everything except sand and an upright spoiler. Lake aside, the map is perfectly flat.

My answer to every volcano request:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's got volcanos almost literally everywhere.  I know there's a flat volcano (can't remember where, though) and there's bound to be something like what you're looking for.
