merchant has gone stack raving mad!

ok so some merchant came onto the map and about 4.73 seconds after he went crazy and the other dwarfs killed him. so heres my question WHAT THE HELL? how dose that even happen? im on ver 3.25

Turns out his prices really WERE insane.

Other dwarves? so it was a dwarf caravan?

I've heard that if you capture a merchant, then he'll eventually go insane without escaping.  If another merchant arrives next year, the new merchant instantly goes insane.

Does this continue the year after that, due to the second insane merchant? That would mean basically 100% insanity in the long run.

Maybe you have absolutely insane FPS.

No wait, the merchant would leave.

And it is 31.25, also... well I have no damn idea. Maybe some bug.

Semi related note: I had a caravan guard dodge into a dried murky pool (hot tropical shrubland) and has been there for several years.  I'm now debating some form of captured dwarven security, using guards who never eat or sleep, and who have no friends.

I had a caravan guard like that and trained her up to be a swordmaster by dropping friends in there with her.  I let her go when on the 14th year of her tenure as the best gladiator at Gougeknives, a goblin cut off her shield hand, and I figured she wouldn't be able to "collect" the ammo from passing crossbowgoblin sieges as well as she used to, so I let her go.  I'll look into legends later to see what her life was like up until then :)

Merchants trapped on the map for too long go insane, as far as I remember. It just happened in my fort a few days back. One went stark raving mad, the other two went berserk and were put down by the guards.

Not sure how one would go mad just after entering, though. I've never seen that.

Hmm, must be something in the water.  The first Elf Merchants to my latest fort probably went mad as well, but I'm pretty sure they made it off the map.

They die from starvation/dehydration/mutual extermination if you let them go insane.
Merchants never eat or drink, sane ones don't mind it, but insane ones do.

You make it sound it's right according to ethics and morale, which is right since they're just elves.
