Nightvision.
« on: June 02, 2011, 09:50:28 pm »

So, I was wondering how could dorfs see underground in all those dark places. Well more precisely, I should ask myself about every DF creatures, 'cause they all know how to move in my underground lairs.
Feel free to contribute with any precise answers or personal ideas.

And please excuse my bad english, car ce n'est pas ma langue maternelle.

Some creatures give off light, but not enough to light up the whole cavern. I wonder why as well.

Dwarves are adapted to the underground, so they have a reason. Adventurers...

No.

How do dwarves fire siege weapons and crossbows while blind?

@Poindexterity : quite agree with your DD explanation, though it doesn't enlight us about the great agility of other non bat-eyed creature to travel in our settlements.

Nothing to see, but in Minecraft light and the day/night cycle are key elements of the game, and in DK if I remeber well, torches were automatically disposed during the digging of your imps. Maybe caring about light effects is a technology/ 3D render novelty. Hm. Must dig in my oldies to check.

Only reasonable explanation is that a creature adapted to living underground has extremly adapted eyes. Could be also a factor why our fellas vomit overground; if the eyes adapt more slowly compared to our human ones it may give funny outputs which lead to dizziness and vomit. Alcohol counters these effects, leaving a dwarf normal overground.

However, most dwarves have severe alcohol adaptation.... ;)

Underground has low levels of light and very little air circulation.

Dwarves develop low-light vision (plump helmets are packed with beta carotene!) and their facial follicles become sensitive to the motions that a breeze produces against their beards, which allows them to tell where tunnels turn.

As they go deeper, their eyes become less relied upon, and they adapt further to rely on their whisker-based folli-cation.

These eventually become so sensitive that, should a dwarf venture outside, the wind is the equivalent of multicolored and varying strobe lights. This is as aggravating to a dwarf's folli-cation as a Pink Floyd show seen while sober is to our sight, up to the point of causing nausea.

Cats can see single photons, Dwarves just follow their cats about underground.
