If you simply tell a dwarf to go pull the lever to lock himself into the room, then you don't have to watch it like a hawk till they get there.  They lock themselves in, and don't immediately go running off to do something else.

You can then take a look and see if it's safe to activate the smasher, and command the locked in dwarf to pull that lever.  Then the door open lever.

Manually controlling doors will work, but it's just one more thing to micromanage, and there's already no end to the things you have to micromanage in DF, lol.
