It's not that bogeymen are more DIFFICULT than night creatures as such, it's just that they're far, far less interesting. I'd rather get attacked by a horde of minor night creatures if I wander out at night, not a bunch of faceless nothings that aren't even historical figures. >:(

Technically they are. They show up in the number of creatures you've brutally and viciously murdered.

The Russian throws Steiner into a chair, screaming "I do not care about genetic research!"
The Russian pulls out a M1911!
The Russian screams "I am Viktor Reznov! And I, will, have, my, REVENGE!"
The Russian shoots Steiner between the eyes.
The Russian loses juice.

The ones with a mouth or a [GRASP] tag if I remember Toady's post correctly.
...So I should definitely NOT cut off his arms as I'm going to spawn two more necromancers.

No, the limbs don't regenerate or anything, they just move around on their own. I would think an armless man and two removed arms would be weaker than a man with two arms, so limb-removal will just be less effective than usual.

Here's an unsettling thought: what if necromancy was used by things that are already damn near impossible to kill? Like a bronze colossus.

I mean, they never have names or anything. They're just nothin'.
They don't even become giant bogey-lords after killing an adventurer, proceeding to rule the night with an iron(shadow?) fist. :(

Yes, but they get mentioned in the number of them that died at your hands. They get an obituary.

I said it in the future of the fortress tread, but I want the ability to "reclaim" dead characters by raising them as the undead. Just keep doing that till there's nothing left of the body.
YEs.
Urist McAdventurer has been killed 1337 times.

"In early spring of the year 200, urist mcdwarf killed the dreaded necromancer BLABLABLA and claimed his power"
"In late winter of 200, urist mcdwarf froze in a river"
"In early spring of 201, urist was revived by random mc urist, then proceeded to kill him."
"In early summer of 201, Urist was eaten by a lion."
"In late summer of 201, urist was again revied by random Mcurist"
"In late fall of 201, Urist Mcdwarf was killed by the dragon "Toothflames"
"In late win- OH screw it, No more revieves for you, you dead nao."
By the end of that he'd be a fried gargling mess! still has his uses...

Bogeymen are OK. But there should be different kinds (with different names, not just appearances), and not all areas should have any, or the same kinds. In some areas you could get "Don't rest alone at night, there are bloodlings about" in others you could get "You should never sleep in the wood in winter with an odd number of companions, the vomitwretches will attack you." or "If you go into the Swamp of Towers, remember to wear a chicken bone amulet at all times, as protection against the shadow people".

The prospect of wearing certain clothing or fulfilling certain tasks to avoid being attacked by bogeyman is a pleasing prospect.
