Evercage
The dwarven prison

Introduction

The mountain home of dwarven civilization The Faithful Furnaces has been under martial law for several years. The crime rates have grown to unimaginable level, riots are daily events and no sane dwarf would travel outside their home without an escort. Guards are unable to solve the problem as the jails are already full and there is no room for more criminals. So, as the execution is out of the question due traditions, the criminals can act freely without fear of punishment.

Finally, at the late summer of year 100, the captain of guards figured out the solution; all the criminals should be sent to remote location, where they build their own fortress which also serves as their prison. The criminals sent there are the worst of their kind, those whose sentence is no shorter than life long. The criminals are allowed to live in the fortress without being chained, but they are not allowed to cross the borders of the fortress and they must work for the mountain home, gathering materials and crafting goods. All the time they are observed by the guards and personnel, who also have the rights to punish anybody not obeying the rules and orders.

It took only a week from the captain of guards to persuade the king to establish such prison fortress, and so seven dwarves were sent out to journey the location chose beforehand where the prison should be built. Of these seven dwarves six were criminals, guarded by single dwarf equipped with bronze axe and iron armor. The prisoners were chosen from the worst criminals basing on the skills needed to build the initial prison. The guard also got two war dogs to help keeping the criminals under control as well as one cat, one camel and one yak cow.

And so they begun their journey, knowing that they it was the last time they saw the glorious halls of the mountain home...

Description

Evercage is community fortress using Dwarf Fortress Advanced mod version 0.3.6 with the No Aquifers, Enable All Metals and No Cursed Stones optional features. More info about the mod can be found here.

There story is told in outside perspective, so any dwarf can be claimed. You can choose from three options: guard, personnel or prisoner. If you want a guard I need at least nickname and optionally which weapons the guard should specialize. Personnel is same as noble, and for them I need the nickname and which position you want. For the criminals, who are the common folk of the fortress, I need the nickname again and optionally the crime(s) the dwarf has committed to be sentenced to Evercage. Also, if you pick prisoner, you can request for specific job, though I can't promise anything. Every other request (like gender, personality etc.) will be taken in account, but can't promise anything.

When a dwarf is claimed I will post the description of the dwarf here. Also, feel free to post suggestions, comments and even personal diaries.

Bellow are few pictures of the embarking location and the items the dwarves got at the beginning. The location is more or less flat, with volcano about in the middle, a tall mountain just northwest from it and flat hill on the east. The wagon has been parked in the middle between the volcano and the mountain. There is brook running through the map on the west side. The area is covered in snow, but I will turn off temperature once everything has melted.

This sounds reaaal FUN.
I will take a prisoner, named Niney. He was building a mini-prototype of something similar to the Insta-Goblinite trap, but an upgraded version, but it broke and lava got leaked and not his house got burned, but from other commoners, so he was sentenced.
But he proves to be a good mason and architect, even though he did something so dwarfy that he got sentenced.

Oh, awesome! Great idea! :D
I originally thought of going for a prisoner, but I think I'd like a guard, named Yegg.
He's (preferably) a pretty weedy fellow, very pessimistic and complains about everything. He constantly moans about getting this posting, and fully expects to be murdered in his sleep. He dislikes the prisoners, and doesn't trust 'em a bit.
I don't really mind what weapon he uses, if not the starting guard, then just whatever migrant with some slight weapon skill happens to come along, perhaps? :D Sounds like a cool fort.

Well, the starting guard is female, so if you don't mind I will give you the first male one who comes?

Chapter 1 - The Arrival

The first day of the year 101 had just begun when Keywalls, the guard and the leader of the expedition, signaled to the criminals to halt. She studied the map she had been given, facing the volcano first and then turning towards the tall mountain on the other side of her. After a long moment, during which the criminals were getting a bit nervous, she rolled the map and turned to face the rest of the group standing near the wagon.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

"This is the spot we were supposed to reach. Here shall be built the grand prison fortress Evercage. This means no more pulling the wagon for you!"

One of the prisoners, male fat miner, threw the rope to the ground.

"Finally! I wouldn't have been able to pull this damned wagon any further! Why didn't we put the animals to pull instead of us?"

Keywalls grinned mischievously.

"Because I wanted you to do the pulling. It only made good for you, so stop complaining. Now, let's get to work. I need all the trees cut down nearby. The miners should begun mining the entrance immediately, I think the southern side of the mountain over there is a good place for that. I need one volunteer to scout the immediate area, especially the surroundings of that volcano. Don't want to anything to come up there without me knowing. And I want someone to check that nothing has been damaged during the journey. Finally, the lucky one who didn't got any work is going to clean and oil my armor."

She stared the prisoners with cold eyes.

"No move! I ain't have all day!"

Before anybody was able to move their muscles she faced the prisoner assigned to masonry.

"Oh, and Niney, you stay the hell away from the magma, you hear me? If I see you anywhere near that crater I will grap you from your beard and dip you in that hot red liquid! Understood?"

Chapter 1.01 -Niney Intermission!

There. That guard spelled my name wrong. Oh well, can't be helped.
But the more interesting is that volcano... Heheheheh...

Yeah. It's going to take a long time, but I guess it will be worth. But I guess I didn't saw any water source, did I?
Because if there was water, I could able to try to reproduce something similar to that pure obsidian fort that was written on the archives...
Or that legendary grand fortress....

It's never easy to mine when the ground is frozen. This ancient knowledge also became familiar to the miners of Evercage while they tried to make an entrance to the southern side of the southeast corner of the mountain. But the frozen ground wasn't the only thing that made them frustrated. Keywalls had decided to make a habbit of checking the progression of the entrance every two hours, throwing angry comments on how they should work faster or how they were idling whenever she turned her back to them.

Finally, after eight days of hard work, the entrance was ready.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sure it was ugly like hell, but they really didn't have time to make anything grand as Keywalls was in hurry of getting all the supplies inside.

One of the miners approached Keywalls.

"Milady, the entrance has been finished. We have also completed the landing in the first floor."

Keywalls raised her eyes from the axe she was oiling.

"Good. Now, go and gather everybody here. I have a something to say."

After few minutes all the six prisoners had gathered before Keywalls, who stood up, holding her bronze axe in her right hand.

"Now that you are all here I have a small lesson for you. I have spotted one panda and a group of wild dogs in nearby area. The lesson is that it's better to stay away from them. And no, I'm not worried about your sorry asses, I wouldn't care less if that panda bites your head off, but for now I can't afford loosing workers. So I order you to stay as far from the wildlife as you can, I will deal the dogs if those decided to come too close. Now, get back to work!"

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The answer "Yes ma'am!" came in total unision and everybody returned to their work.

Several days came and went without anything special happening. From dawn to dusk the prisoners were working hard to get at least some kind of shelter ready. The first good news came when ImBocaire, the farmer of the fortress, informed Keywalls that the farm was ready and the first seeds had already been planted.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

"Ah, that's good, thank you for informing me. Now we can end this regulation of your daily rations."

ImBocaire stared Keywalls in disbelief.

"Regulation? Are you saying that you have been cutting our daily rations?! What for?"

"Ah, don't trouble your mind with such things that are beyond you. As the current leader of this camp I saw it necessary to prepare for worst, so that's why the regulation. Shoo! You surely have more important things to do than bother me with such things?"
