I was traveling in the caverns, trying to get from the frozen little continent I started on to a larger, more populous continent to the south. Silly me, I go to sleep...

And wake up on the surface.

A. No caves for miles. Did I sleepwalk farther than I can normal-walk in one day, TWICE, before I woke up?
B. I would have thought that, seeing as I was napping in the moss, cavern critters wopuld ignore me, eating around me or something, or would think I was food.
And then I'd show them...[insert evil smiley face here]

Sleepwalking in DF often equates to teleportation, unfortunately sometimes in to areas that are not possible to leave.

Some very annoying times.

1. Teleported on top of a lord's tower in a city I wasn't even close to. No way down, legendary human splattered on impact.
2. Teleported outside and boogiemen curb stomped me.

you can thank the fact sleeping just traveling and just reloads the game.

Exactly. Sleeping is no longer waiting a certain number of steps in the game, it is now reloading the world you're in and setting the clock forward. If you sleep in the caverns weird shit is almost guaranteed to happen, the most noticeable being that your companions disappear from existence as far as the game is concerned. You will not be able to find them again.
