Caverns are FUN.  I like to have one soldier on embark to deal with wild animals and early problems.  I check each dwarf's physical attributes for "strong" or "agile" or "heals fast" and the best qualified gets the job.  Sounds like you dealt with it well though.

He's likely going to be fine, even without a crutch. In fact, none of the dwarves in my current fort ever use such props. They's drag themselves, year after year after year, limping along  from the cavern pastures to the surface forges to do the quickest task in .... a season? Next: break time! Crutchless /= useless.
