Military should follow orders, even if it's a willpower dependent skill like, "Discipline". I don't mind if there is a CHANCE of someone going berserk and charging, but every dwarf ever doing it is infuriating.

The personality traits should control the rate at which soldiers will gain discipline.

Without sufficient discipline, a soldier will break formation and charge towards the enemy or run away(if outnumbered/losing). The behavior of one soldier will have an significant effect on the rest of his squad, especially if he is the squad leader, and hence a single soldier breaking formation could lead to others joining in, eventually resulting in the entire squad charging. Similarly, a single soldier fleeing for his life could lead to a rout. A separate "commander" skill for the squad leader will help to maintain the effective discipline of his underlings.

To encourage the use of formations, siegers should also move in clusters of two or more squads, allowing them to mob individual soldiers.

Thief:"Quiet kitty, Qui-"
Cat:"THIEF! Protect the hoard from the skulking filth!"
The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.
