Fortress Buckdread: A goblin fortress
« on: August 26, 2011, 11:02:17 pm »

I decided I wanted to try playing as gobbo's for a while.

I embarked with 2 miners, a woodcutter, 2 crafters (all crafting labors, as well as masonry and carpentry.), and 2 animal processors (Butchering, tanning, spinning, milking, etc.)

I also embarked with 33 male trolls, 30 female trolls, 30 ogres, and 30 ogress's

I am currently carving out a relatively long entrance hallway, which also has a room for the barracks in it. The trolls/ogres are all pastured outside in separate pens.

Now then, first couple of questions:

are goblins able to farm? (if not, no biggie. I'll just butcher trolls/ogres.)

Are there any specific advantages/disadvantages to using goblins?

Will I be singed by dwarves :D?

Note to self: Ogres and Troll's give you BIG CASH PRIZES!

As in, too much meat to do anything with. Time to start mass production stone pots!

using my goblins or homebrew?

goblins can indeed farm, but they may not embark with seeds, so you must use herbalism to gather up plants, and use them for something besides cooking so that you get the seeds to plant.

i havent really gotten around to testing ogres, i made them embarkable as "defensive" critters.  trolls are for shearing and perhaps meat, if seigers and ambushers dont "bring" enough.

second thought, does not sound like my goblins, mine cannot make rock pots.

I did a homebrew modification.

Also, just found out I can't make rock pots. Time to mass produce barrels instead!

On another note:

It's mid-summer, and I have no migrants. What gives?

EDIT: They just showed up shortly after posting this!

as you're doing homebrew, did you give goblins some nobles?  specifically at least a millitia commander?

...What?

Doesn't that stuff come with it?

nope, that's the whole reason i actually uploaded my mod rather than keep it only for me....  goblins were missing a few things.

without at least a militia commander, you're kind of doomed to failure unless you rely on traps exclusively for defense, and that is not very gobliny at all.

it's not too hard to mod in the required positions to make goblins really playable, but if you like, i've done the work for you, as well as making about all creatures that goblins would use tamable, adding in healing rates for some tissues that lack it (specifically nail, cartilage, spinal nerves, and the brain), and making humans as well as kobolds no_eat and no_drink (humans because snatched youngsters would die within a year or three of being snatched)

oh, and i gave goblins access to bronze.
