I'm a newbie so it might be my mistake, but I hit 'd' to designate mining, then 'd' again to mine, but when I hit enter in two places to start, nothing happens. Does anyone have advice?

If you are on the surface you use channeling or stairs to dig down. Mining only mines walls on the current level you are looking at.

Try to channel a 1x1 place ([ d ] > [ h ]) and than go a z-level lower ([ shift ] + [ . ]). Mining should be possible than.

Did you forget to bring a pickaxe to dig with? It gets really annoying when you do.

Also can command d-h (channel) or d-d (mine) then paint target tiles with the mouse. And yeah, embark with one anvil and 2-3 picks, 1-3 axes.
