Dining Hall Seating vs Fortress Population
« on: June 30, 2011, 01:03:03 pm »

In the very beginning, I try for 1:1 seating vs population just for flavor.  Once the population gets bigger, I take it down to about 1:4 since it seems that no more than 25% of the population actually eat at the same time.  Just wondering what approx. ratios you all use.

I just make a 10x10 room and fill it like so:

Code: [Select]
.ctc.ctc.
.ctc.ctc.
.ctc.ctc.
.ctc.ctc.
.ctc.ctc.
.ctc.ctc.
.ctc.ctc.
.ctc.ctc.
.ctc.ctc.
.ctc.ctc.
Where c is a chair, t is a table, and . is a floor
It usually works. Along the side is either open space to stand, statues and display cases, or food stockpiles. I usually have multiple dining rooms as well though.

even though only a tiny fraction of them are ever eating at the same time, i still keep the ratio 1/1, because i dig the idea, that if need be, we could cram every dwarf in the place into one massive hall for a meeting or feast or announcement or somesuch.

i also really dig the mental image of a 230 seat dwarven cafeteria.

Is the happiness hit for sharing a table really minor?

You realize your capacity is only half what you think it is, right?
Every chair needs it's own table. for every ctc only one dwarf can eat there at a time.

I'm currently trying out dining halls like this. Drains are mist generators/cleaning stations. The intent is to have enough at each major level to support the local workforce with a bit of overhead for haulers. Prepared food and drink supplies are above and below the chairs and tables.

Incorrect, dwarves will share a table, get get a miniscule negative thought from it.

I have a fifty pop fortress running on four tables. Surprisingly I haven't seen if full all to often.

I like to pretend the tables are round.

This may be because the tables are claimed when a dwarf is rummaging around in the food stockpile, long before a dwarf sits down there. Dwarves might even claim tables when they're on the far side of the map, at the very start of an Eat job. ... (Telephones or telepathy?)

I keeps it to 1/4 population myself, or even more if I'm actively expanding. My dining room connects to apartment complex, with four to eight floor above or below the dining room ( I uses a bed and two cabinets for each bedroom, compact ). Or in bigger and more spread out fortress, each bedroom gets a table and chair and is closer to 1 to 1 and are scattered around, clustered around food and drink piles.

24 tables for 250+ was more than enough, which means 10%. But I add more in time, with better tables and decorations, and install small dining room in most far-off parts of my underworld underground empire, so dwarves who happen to be there don't need to travel back. Also I install couple of tables+thrones in barracks, military dwarves sometimes choose to eat there.
