so what exactly happens to a fortress when you abandon it and there is no siege or what ever

say if you have 100+ dwarfs and a fully functioning support system like farms and wells with infinite water?

if it is the capatal?
if its not the capatal?

No matter what the population or overall status of the fort, the population disperses and all the items get strewn about as if there was a massive fortress wide tantrum. Visiting the abandoned site in Adventure mode will show this, as will a reclaim.

Everyone starves or flees.

Things get jumbled about.

And all the animals butcher themselves.

so what exactly happens to a fortress when you abandon it and there is no siege or what ever

Remember, just because there is no visible siege, does not mean there is one in waiting. For example, when I abandoned one of my forts due to a tantrum spiral, I got the same messsage I would get if I had abandoned during a siege.

EDIT: And yes, it would be exactly the same as it would during a siege, but there would be no invaders remaining. Everyone will flee, items will be scattered, food will rot, and I think the animals will starve/
