So what's this business with the improved GRAFIX in the

I noticed a few weeks ago (but hadn't joined the forums at that point) that in the Army Arc development page there are several pictures which depict an improved graphical presentation among other things. Maybe for many this is long overdue, but I personally think the ASCII visual style feels so perfectly suited for the game. Is DF seriously going to undergo a graphical overhaul? Are DF's present graphics only provisional? D: I find that strangely difficult to imagine.

Im pretty sure those are specially rendered. If you take a screenshot of your fortress all you get is ASCII.

Anyhow, the base graphics will get better eventually. Right now we don't need them for most things.

However there is room for improvement. I suggested diagonal walls a long time ago and Toady said that it would be hard to do because the engine does not support graphical layering. What that means is diagonal walls would be imposible because the "filler" triangles needed to complete the diagonal line can not be added.

But if we had that we could do amazing things even with ASCII. Things like diagonal siege engines and decorated floors.

Which images are you talking about?  There are several images of the High Detail Map you can get in Legends mode, and it's always looked nice.

Yeah, those are detail maps, go to Legend mode and hit D(I think it's D), it takes a while to make though.

I tried legends mode once and it was just a bunch of historical information. Cool, but not as cool as DF mode. D:

This is just a height map... I don't see any link between it and in-game fortress graphics.
It looks like you've misinformated the forum comrades =).
