I don't know. I guess there's a way to store ash in bars and the dwarves find it more convenient?

I don't think ash can become a menacing spike anyway...

Did your dwarf, perhaps, grab an ash tree log when making the artifact? So maybe it's menacing with spikes of wood, as I've never seen them grab the material ash.

If I remember right, ash predates powders being added to the game.

Personally, I hate the problems associated with powders, and wish I could mod them all to be bars.
Mostly due to how DF manages containers.

Don't give Toady any ideas, on ash.
I like having a magma stack built from "ash bars" and "ash logs"  ;)

well, as much as i like how clean them being bars is, it bugs my sense of ....what should be.

i am also sure a lot more people would be happier with it being a powder than not

Depends on if they want ash to be realistic or playable.

If I wanted realism, I'd go outside.

No, its realistic.

I dont think realism is a major concern in a game about alcoholic midgets fighting dragons and soapmen.
