I really enjoyed reading that article, and I think it will do great things for Dwarf Fortress's "circulation". I agree that it was a surprisingly intimate article, but I still enjoyed reading up on how Toady does his thing, and the reporter seemed to know what he's talking about.

And yes, I believe that the article will cause a rise in the forum population. I just hope they are civilized...*Adjusts Top Hat and Monocle*

And maybe if he's lucky, Toady might also get some more devs or so, maybe someone who enjoys playing with the ASCII and has played DF for a while?

You mean to work on DF? He has been very adamant a few times that he doesn't want anyone else to help program it or have access to its code.

I wonder how the article was done. Did the reporter gradually infiltrate Toady's life, in the style of Jane Goodall?

Here's one more who found the article inspirational.

I've had the same thoughts as Toady regarding modern trends in the game industry.  I do feel like intentionally designing games to be hollow and addictive is abusive -- ethically, I find it akin to drug dealing.  It's wonderful to see a game dev who feels the same way and acts accordingly... and manages to get by doing so, completely on their own terms.  It's something I dream of doing, but I don't have the same singular focus.

I do think simple, addicting games have their place.  It's healthy for a person to be able to shut down and mindlessly hammer a dopamine button once in a while.  It's just sickening how all-encompassing that has become as a design philosophy.

I can't help but be concerned for Toady's health, and it's remarkable to me that he is so focused without burning out.  Someday, I'll have more freedom to donate, and hopefully that situation can improve.  I'd love to drop a massive donation on him from out of the blue, at least once.  I know he chooses his situation happily, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind having the resources to make certain improvements.

Also, I was fine with the tone of the article.  I thought it was awesome how it portrayed their integrity, uniqueness, and love for what they do.

Toady, please, try and take better care of yourself. We all want you to still be here in 20 years, no matter whether you are done with Dwarf Fortress or not! I am not judging or trying to be disrespectful, just concerned as I used to live a very similar lifestyle, and it eventually caught up with me, as Im a diabetic now. Im only 33, was diagnosed at 30.

On a happier note, though, congratulations about the NYT article and the art exhibit! You and ThreeToe deserve all the recognition you can get!

I thought the same, I hope people right now downloading DF won't be disappointed by the fact that the current version doesn't have Vampire Dwarves (or zombies getting suspicious by the fact that the necromancer isn't aging at all).

I have to say, it's so beautifully poetic that the example image of a fortress, taken for the New York Freaking Times (and finally it's not a placeholder screenshot from the 2D era), shows a puny little fortress that has already lost a dwarf, and it's carved out of good old, dependable, eye-gouging orthoclase.

This will probably bother me for a while. Bloody orthoclase.

I used the phrase New York frikkkin Times in FotF without seeing this thread.  Must be a common sense of awe and importance.

Anyway just posting here to say Congratulations to the Adams brothers.  Even if it's just a little exibit that is part of a larger one, it is the first step to world domination.

FYI, the article just hit the front page of bOING-bOING so we should expect to see some curious new players showing up over the weekend.  We might want to create a "if you got here reading the NYTimes article, here's the Wiki and here's your life jacket" thread...

If we give them a life jacket, how will they ever learn to deal with often drowning?

Now I want to see that documentary of this more than EVER. LEt it be narrated by David Attenborough oh please oh please OH PLEASE

"Observed from our camouflage blind set up on the southern edge of the spare room bed, we could clearly and easily record this footage of the ToadyOne, perched majestically on its natural seat, the common household office chair. See how it wobbles from time to time? That's a common trait amongst nocturnal animals who consume large amounts of soda and program until nearly dawn. After a month of intense observation, we decide to begin phase two of our research - earning this mighty creature's trust and affection. We started by carefully laying out small offerings of RAM, leading back towards our basecamp in the lobby..."

You know, this also makes me realize that Toady's grandmother might be watching us. Judging us. Silently. Forever withholding from us her endless bag of grandmotherly gifts because of our crimes. :<
