Where are the airships?
In the 1800s or so, IIRC. Unless you mean plain ol' hot air baloons, in which case: In the 1500s or so, IIRC.
What. But. You answered when, not where. And even then, Dwarf Fortress rarely reaches years that high, and I doubt airships would suddenly appear when it did.
DF doesn't take tech from above ~1400s. That was my point.

What catastrophic changes in elf society changed their tile from E to e?
Goblin snatchers stole their Shift-key.

Because DF, despite its awesome, is still only known to a fairly small number of people (in the low millions at most, probably) and enjoyed by even fewer.

Why do people think that because DF is awesome, it must be universally recognized as such?

Because people are extremely stupid whenever it comes to being fans of something. "I like ponies and I want you to know that if I get into a fight about it then I'm right! Here is me talking about it in numerous threads and complaining whenever someone tells me to stop!" This isn't an issue here, but on the Minecraft forums it was awful.

How come lots of creatures (GCS, dragons, etc.) don't ever reproduce?

They eat their young, because in the 1050 years it takes for dwarves to make it undrground they grow famished...

Why doesn't the king tell the fortress overseer what to do with complete authority?

Kings that do that tend to accidentally drown in magma for no reason. Those next in the royal succession take note.

Should royal dwarves be more likely to have the (fabricated) mannerism "gently rotates hand when speaking to crowds"?

Yes. But they shouldn't be talking to crowds, they should be relaxing in the VIP noble only deathtrap conference chamber. Filled with fine weaponry, other nobles and an distinct lack of food.

Why does breaking a bone cause enough pain for a dwarf to fall unconscious, but there is no pain from having a limb severed?

If a limb is severed, the nerves going to and from it are severed, too. On the other hand, a broken bone has nerves, the bits of sharp bone go into places that have nerves, if you don't stop putting weight onto it that'll just make it worse...

Why are dwarven nobles so dumb that they don't even exert all of the power that, say, the King of All Dwarvenkind should exert?

Dwarf Fortress takes from whatever time period it wants. If things before the 1400s fit the theme then sure but it would seem a little silly to be deliberately limited to things before that time.

And consort with a common outpost overseer?

I have a.mountain hall listed as a neighbor n the embark screen.  How do I uncover its name?

Why can I make a fort worth 300,000☼ and offer 4,999☼ yet not become the mountain home until I offer a single ☼ more?
Logged
We just need to get Toady to embed a Lisp interpreter into DF.  Learning lambda calculus in order to play the game wouldn't make DF's learning curve much steeper.

The king's private bookkeeper notices via psychic link (he has been working non-stop for a decade and has god-like mental powers) and then notifies the king's escort that they shouldn't go yet.

How come nobody uses ballistae for dwarf-execution chambers? They friendly-fire...

Ballista arrows are expensive and require a trained operator. Besides, death by magma is much more honorable a death for the People of the Stone.

What happens if a dwarf gains legendary skill in woodcrafting, swimming, and other such undwarfy tasks?

But you never see a movie where a terrible coal plant accident causes a horrible devastation, do you? Nope, everyone seems to think that nuclear plants get their energy by smacking live atomic warheads all day or something.

Litast ran through the corridors. The mob hadn't listened. Wasn't woodcrafting a way to get rid of the blighted plants, twisting their gross stalks in the horrid sunlight? Wasn't he a dwarven hero for becoming a legendary woodcrafter? Why did nobody understand? He had a terrible headache, but he couldn't stop.

He turned a corner. The way was blocked by the wooden hives he had created to provide honey for the fortress. Sunlight filtered in from above, making him wince. Behind him were scores of rapid footsteps, getting louder and louder.

Litast hopped up on the hives. The sun made him queasy, but he had no choice. His headache intensified, and his ears felt like they were going to fall out of his head. The fortress residents turned the corner, battle-axes in hand, but saw nothing besides a fresh footstep in the dust and a screaming elf wearing clothes much to small for him, running as fast as he could.

Why are all dwarven names unisex?
