It is because elves want to keep a monopoly on wood. So they pay the dwarves to make stuff out of rock, and try to stop them cutting down trees.

Why did the elf merchants exit the map via the caverns in one of my fortresses?

Why don't dwarves ever use their beards for combat? I mean, they can engrave walls and mince food.

Referring to a previous answer, because they have secret passages right through the circus of oblivion. Can dwarves dig underneath that?
