This is basically a burglar alarm. When a hostile walks over a pressure plate, somewhere in the fort, a hatch opens, dropping something to a room below that has another pressure plate activated by the same something. This plate is linked to a drawbridge that then raises to block entry to a corridor leading to the main fortress. As long as the something is still on the pressure plate, the bridge stays raised denying entry.
Linking the latter pressure plate to other drawbridges, can trap intruders for disposal at your leisure. To reset the alarm, remove the something from the pressure plate that is sending the signal.
The early setup is to use chained war animals at the forts entrance, with cage traps nearby. Anytime a creature with trap avoid is wounded, any trap can nail them. When they flee from the chained animals, the cage trap collects them for whatever nefarious purpose you intend.
Capturing a babysnatcher is a indication that a ambush party is lurking somewhere, so get ready for FUN

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
Sincerely,
The Administration
