trouble building carpentry workshop
« on: July 27, 2011, 08:44:38 pm »

hi,

I just started playing (or at least trying to play :-( :-), v0_31_25;

it built a mason's workshop just fine, but won't build a carpentry workshop.
* I tried in 2 different locations;
* there are enough logs;
* one of my dwarfs is a skilled carpenter and is idle (in fact all 7 of my dwarfs are idle by now);
* when I go and look at the building, it tells me that it "needs carpentry";

what am I missing?

responses sent straight to my email are great - thanks!

Do any of your dwarves actually have the Carpentry labor enabled?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

As Quietust says, make sure at least one dwarf has the carpentry labor turned on. That dwarf will also need to not be doing anything else, so if you want it done quickly you might also turn off all other labors on the dwarf you choose. (Even then you'll have to wait until that dwarf is not eating/drinking/sleeping/on break, etc.)

A common new player mistake/confusion occurs if you have a large wall or floor building programme going on - if raw materials for the walls or floors that are waiting to be built are sitting in the site of your planner workshop, nobody will move them until they are used to make thier designated bit of the floor/wall, cancelling the workshop build order.

thanks for the responses!

and yes, I think you got it - when I look at my carpenter dwarf and go to 'prf' - 'labor', I see that 'woodworking' is lit, but when I look at the detail then I see that only 'wood cutting', but not 'carpentry' is enabled.

don't have time to play now, but that should do it :-)

thanks again!
