[Spoiler] Digging too deep.
« on: July 28, 2011, 06:45:15 pm »

Guys i had my first encounter with hell yesterday and i opened it up after getting all my pretty adamantium (is that how you spell it?)

And the demons actually flew up from the massive pit and into my fort??

It took less then 30 seconds for my force to be destroyed and a minute later my fortress.

is there any logical way to combat this? i saw that they cannot move through doors unless a dwarf opens it for them.

Any ideas?

P.S they seem to shoot fire so would drowning them work?

a) Adamantine.

b) All demons can fly.

c) Door won't stop them for long. Raised drawbridges will stop them completely, but their pathfinding will lag your game to hell (pardon the pun). They are also no less vulnerable to cave-ins than anything else is.

d) They are all immune to both water and magma, and don't need to breathe.

I recommend a series of ceiling drops, followed by a large steel-and-adamantine-equipped military force (axedwarves, possibly with marksdwarf support).

After the initial wave, more will spawn, but those ones will wander around the underworld like wild animals, only attacking if your dwarves get too close.

Or you could just make a long hallway and fill it up with a bunch of repeating spear traps.

We were hoping for a constant fort at some point, having players in different time zones so that the fort never actually stopped running.  Come back overnight and find a giant penis has been constructed.  Glory to the penis gods.

A REALLY long hallway full of (manually) repeating spike traps, preferably steel, will kill anything. It's possible to kill them with a military, but... definitely nearing impossible.

I'd recommend just avoiding hell, personally. I have yet to open it for anything but destroying my fortress. Until you're familiar with the game to the point that you want to conquer hell just to set up a dining room there, it's best avoided. Once you think you're getting close while digging, start smoothing fortifications into the walls, That way, you'll reveal it when you reach it, but they can't get through.

Elves! Traps, ceiling collapsing, spikes? Where is your honor, your bloodlust and your general awesomeness? The only true way to fight hell is the man dwarf's way: fifty dorfs, steel clad, legendary and ready to show these demons what hell is really like!

On the other side of the lever-activated 300 metric ton slab of rock, standing next to the axedwarves. Why?

Seriously. Even Gandalf tried this before he fought the Balrog one on one. Do I hear anyone accusing Gandalf of lacking awesomeness?

I think there's a lot of fun to be had in fighting Hell unspoiled.  It's more fun when you make a plan and it doesn't quite work how you expected.

However, I have just finished writing a strategy section on the wiki that details some of the problems you might run into, should you choose to read it:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Demon

Hopefully, it has some useful information for you.  There are a lot of good ideas on the boards for fighting demons, but those ideas have rarely been tested, and actual implementation of them can be very difficult.

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...<P>It should be pretty fun though.

I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.
