4x4 embark with 14,621 cotton candy
« on: August 03, 2011, 12:37:04 pm »

So i spotted a 4x4 embark area on my .25, fortress defense powered world. This embark includes a 15+ zlevel waterfall of two major rivers meeting, and it tickled my hydraulic engineer side. A lot of money and man-hours are spent irl to lessen the environmental impact of large dams, but dorfs will be dorfs, to them flooding the upstream elven forests and substituting the river with magma to kill frogmen downstream might as well be the entire purpose of building the dam in the first place.

This was the purpose of this embark until i fired up prospector (because im savescumming scum):

If im not mistaken, a 4x4 embark is 96x96=4096, which means i can comfortably pave an entire zlevel with candy bars, maybe without even needing to anger the clowns.

Now I REALLY want to fire up revealer to check wheter this is a glitch or just a gift from Armok himself. But i intend to play here, and i don't want to comepletely spoil myself. Which is why i come to you guys. Maybe one of you can check the caverns to see if there is any abnormality.

Thanks!

There are six spires, two of which extend almost a hundred z-levels up. You're pretty damn lucky.

96x96=4096
96 x 96 = 9216

Each embark square is 48 by 48 tiles, and there are 16 squares in a 4x4 embark. That's over 35,000 tiles.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

36864 tiles :/ Well, maybe i can pave an entire level if i do paved roads instead of floors.

Edit: according to wiki, each paved road consumes tiles/4+1 bars, so 19x19=361 paved roads, each 10x10, consuming 26 candy wafers each, are enough to pave 36100 out of 36864 tiles, at the cost of 9386 wafers. It sounds doable, but i don't think i can recover 10k candy without breaching hfs. It's still a noble goal.

What are ye, an elf?! Use yer dwarven ingenuity to construct a machine that closes off HFS without revealing it!

Seriously, though, I do have a design for a machine that closes off HSF without revealing it. basically, If one collapses a huge pillar thing on top of a tube, and it doesn't cave in past the tube, one knows its safe to dig that layer. One collapses it while no dwarves are present in the collapse room, so that no one sees past it if it does go through the tube. If it does, It can only fall so far, at which point it stops and blocks visibility.  ;)

Never tested it, and never heard of anyone else trying it, so idk. but its possible. Would require some magma sea drainage to be fully applicable. And possibly some SMR engineering. (build floor on SMR, collapse rock onto floor, channel new natural rock floor, repeat)

I guess the danger would be that the tube happens to be situated above a pit. In which case one would know from the initial collapse result, and one could let/not let in miners accordingly. If no friendly is there to see it, the fog of war stays where it was.
