Entire island on one embark?
« on: August 03, 2011, 05:25:04 pm »

An embark where all edge tiles of the embark are water:

1. Is this possible?
2. Will the game ever even generate such a scenario?
3. Does this mean no migrants, traders, or new surface wildlife?
4. Will they come in through the caverns instead?
5. What if the caverns are unexplored?

Yes, but rare. Set the elevation x-variance up, as well as the volcanism higher. You should try to have lots of volcanoes because those tend to create ocean islands.

See #1. It will still be huge, though, so you'll get a very low FPS.

3. Does this mean no migrants, traders, or new surface wildlife?

I believe they will spawn in the center in that case. I don't know. But you can create a string of abandoned embarks as a sort of 'bridge' in order allow access to your island.

4. Will they come in through the caverns instead?

They might exit through there, but I'm not sure if they'll enter through them.

5. What if the caverns are unexplored?

See #4.

No matter what you get the first two waves of migrants. It might even spawn them on the water, which would be hilarious. You won't get further migrants, caravans, traders, or goblin sieges. If you find yourself an embark for this, post the save.

I think I recall someone embarking on a major river that was large enough to fit almost the entire screen, with an island in the middle of it.

I've always wanted to do a fort on an island like this.  The FPS is absolutely murderous though.

I'll probably try it out after I finish my current glacier/mountain set up.

Why would FPS be an issue?

If he meant specifically the island in the major river, all that flowing water would be an FPS grind.

AFAIK the ocean waves cause a performance hit as well.  If you had waves on every side of the map that would be quite the hit.

3. Does this mean no migrants, traders, or new surface wildlife?

Yep.  IF there are no valid surface tiles for them to arrive on, no traders, migrants, or surface wildlife will appear.  Also, no ambushes or sieges.  You'll get plenty of aquatic wildlife.

4. Will they come in through the caverns instead?

No.  Cavern tiles don't count as valid arrival tiles for surface dwellers.  You'll get cavern wildlife, of course.  Diplomats and traders will happily leave through the caverns, but that won't matter if they can't arrive in the first place.

You can make a bridge for them, if you want. Perhaps you might need to cast it with magma, I don't know. I recall someone walling off the land part of the map to catch sea-serpents, and traders still arrived in the center of the map, instead of the edge. It was very, very strange.

But if you do the embark-bridge trick, you should still get migrants and traders.
