Does anybody else support putting ads on the forums?
« on: August 03, 2011, 07:59:40 pm »

I think it wouldn't be that annoying, and it would help Toady get some more revenue. Am I alone in thinking this? Or has he already said no to that?

Don't know where Toady stands on the issue, but I for one know I wouldn't be averse to adding Bay12 to my ABP exceptions list.

The ads can only be selling one of two things.

1) magma.
2) fun.

I'm personally strongly against it.  It's intrusive.  And probably damaging.  Both to our computers and to the site's reputation.

lrn2not click everything that shows up.

ads are not damaging to your computer, nor to the site. it would most likely be just a banner ad across the top, and possibly one on the side.

In case you can't tell, I support adding ads.

I'd be fine with ads.

If you don't like them, get an ad blocking addon. Boom, it's as if they don't exist.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Depends on the implementation.
Having a massive blankspace on every page is probably more annoying than an ad itself IMO

NO.

I support it if and only if the ad is always at the very bottom.

If Toady needs the revenue that bad, he can put them up. I'd just adblock them anyway.

However, my personal stance is No.

I would rather it not happen.  But won't complain if it does.

I've heard secondhand (but from a source I trust) quite a bit about malware getting transmitted via stuff like banner ads, even without people clicking on them which is my main thought against them.

Also some of those web rep applications start giving sites a bad rep if it starts seeing enough ads that link to shadier places.  Which probably wouldn't happen quickly at any rate, but it is another point against it.

EDIT: hell, I think I recall seeing one (the crappy McAffe one)already having a few points against the forums from users using what it sees as shadier image hosting sites for their avatars.

The Bay12 website and forums have gone, what, 6+ years with no ads?  And Toady is receiving more donations than ever from fans?  Yeah, I can't really see that there is a need for ads (financially) or that Toady wants them; if he did I'm sure they would be here already.  If there's one thing we should have taken away from the NYT article it's that the vision/dream of DF is more important than mostly anything else, especially money!

If Toady wanted to, I wouldn't be against it. I don't think he wants to.
