If the ads would bring Toady additional income for developing DF, I'm in, with the following conditions:

1. The ads must be unobstructive - no ridiculous flashing, no huge banners
2. The ads must not advertise anything that contradicts the intelligent atmosphere of this forum - porn, pyramid schemes and free car now stuff are way off
3. Toady's approval, of course

Seriously, has anyone got any real reason to oppose ads?

It's not just about "wanting" money. Living without money isn't easy, and developing a game while at it is even more difficult. While Toady has got along fine with just donations, ads would provide a more stable form of income.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

I wouldn't mind Toady living a lifestyle comfortable enough where he doesn't have to worry so much about money and allows him more free time to develop a game I enjoy so much.

Most banner ads these days, like Google Adsense typically only pay money for clicks, and not really enough to be very useful on a forum.  Spamming clicks to try to boost payments is also a really good way to get Toady blacklisted from, say, AdSense or anything.

You know, when I last mentioned the words "open" and "source" consecutively in the context of bug fixes and performance improvements, I was criticized for being a selfish git because I supposedly put a smoother, more functional game ahead of Toady's income.

Where are those people now? This thread is crawling with people who would deny Toady a possible source of income because "it pisses them off" and other such reasons. I think that's about as selfish as it gets. A very minor annoyance could net Toady a stable income, which could mean a lot.

I suspect that it would drive donations DOWN.

"I'm already helping, just by reading the forums!"

"I feel like helping Toady out, I'll click some of the banners."

Don't think so?  Study psychology more.  :X  People react in all kinds of funny ways to this kind of thing.  I think that the presence of ads would make users feel less obligated to donate, and the ad revenue would not make up for the loss in donations.  In other words, Toady gets less money, AND we all get annoyed.

Not really.  They might defray server costs to an extent but it's pretty hard to make more than dollars a month in ad income, unless you're specifically tuning your website for it in exploitative ways.

If you have such good reasonings, you should've posted them before I got to rant about the selfishness of "ads are annoying"-people.

I believe part of the draw of this site is the community, not just the game.  Adbots annihilate community.  This site is large enough, with enough traffic that some small and modest ads for reputable companies should provide enough income to pay for itself, if necessary.

If I ever see something like the "<insert stupid bullshit here> with this one old trick" ads here, this site goes in the kerplonk folder.  Love DF, but there's got to be a limit somewhere, and if DF goes that far down the road, it's not coming back.

Actually, he did, about 20 minutes before you posted.   :D

DF sets out a challenge to us with no explanation and no assistance, and each time we fail it becomes more merciless, but we continue in the hopes that we can show it, "See?  I'm doing good, right?  I kept the little men alive!  You're proud of me, right?"

That's not a good reason to oppose having ads if you ask me.

Project Wonderful, my favorite ad service, pays out independant of clicks or views.  People bid on how valuable they think the ad space is, and the highest bidders pay out that much per day until someone out bids them.  Simple.  The ads are also quite interesting, as long as you block SlipShine.  You get things like the Aristocrat gamers, game-related t-shirt stores and webcomics.
