In theory

Code: [Select]
BBBBBBB
7%%.%%7
BBBBBBB
B = Bridge
. = Open space that's exposed to light
%% = screw pumps
7 = Water not exposed to light

Dwarven machine gun.

I should try that...

Except, I will get a magma-safe bridge, and slowly pur magma over it, then launch the magma at rapid speed.

I have a volcano, so this should work well.

Unless I screw up, that is.

Thank you everyone for the help! I've since flooded the fortress I was working on and now have a new one going up.

It should only work with ice, as it freezes when it goes out of the fortress/reaches an exterior tile, and now that i look at it. IT 000's design is better than mine (faster and more reliable) , but i see a problem... it is also more costly and more complex, and with mine you just need 1 pump to make a curtain over a lot of tiles (don't consider the pic 2d, extend it all over your entrance :D
Also, thanks Kattel :)

Won't the ice stick to the floor the pump is built on?

Dwarven machine gun.

Swap one side for magma and the dwarfiness increases.

Yes it will. Any obsidian formed can also stick to the nearby floors. Either ice or obsidian can also stick to the ceiling, if the level is only 1z high.

If I were building something like this I'd use the following designs:

= is a bridge

Ice dropper:
Code: [Select]
inside | outside
#######
    %%7 <- ice forms here
7777##=

Obsidian dropper:
Code: [Select]
####=####
 %%7 7%%
7##= =##7

I'm trying to remember, will building a floor or wall over a space cause it to become interior so that water won't freeze?

If floors do, will bridges?

I'm just thinking of a weapon that will call a sheet of ice down on enemies.

Simple freezing traps are so yesteryear, now is the time for Dwarven Blizzards

EDIT:  After reading up on the Wiki it looks like an "Ice Sheet" effect is currently impossible.  The best you could get is a line of your desired length but a maximum of 2 width.  I'm sad now, I wanted to have a trap that would cover an entire area in cold, ruthless ice.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.
