Desert Oasis

My current fort, Heatrazor, is in a sandy desert bordered by a barren mountain.  With the complete lack of grass on the map, I put my usual livestock industry on hold, pending cavern breaching and moss growth.  Then, to my surprise, I noticed tons of green tiles just under the surface.  Everywhere I had channeled away was overrun with grass!  I quickly channeled out a large square and soon enough, grass began to grow.  I thought the desert biome tag would prevent this, but I guess the biome applies only to the initial surface layer?  I think I'm going to channel the entire map and make an oasis! 

Edit: Just noticed the following on the wiki for rocky wastelands: "For pasture, the top layer of dirt can simply be channeled through, grass will grow in the resulting pit."

I skipped right over that while reading about sand deserts.  Adding this tidbit to that subsection now.  It certainly makes deserts a lot more viable for the big alpaca farm I have planned :)!

That could be an interesting theme/challenge fort- embark in a desert with an aquifer, channel once for grass, and then channel a lake in the middle of the grass.  Defend your claim from the scavengers.

Last I checked you could do this in the tundra too. Basically anywhere with soil.
