Same thing happening to me.  It's probably notable that the map isn't a pure glacier, but has a forest area over the southern half of it.

I got an ant colony on the 'open space' level above a stream (the z-level directly above the level containing the water).  The ant colony spawned in the open space but adjacent to the cliff so it looks like it's hanging in midair.

Found another one that had spawned in the middle of the open space above a pool.  I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to happen.
