Yeah, I could totally see that. Oh, or better.
Hurls your foes, then drops a block of obsidian on them.

So what you're saying is we need to build geysers, and devices with which to pour magma on your active geysers?

I keep getting this feeling that this will kill more dwarves than anything else...

It will.
That's the beauty of it.

Lets list this:
Potentially difficult to make
Involves magma suspended above your fortress
Involves causing cave-ins above your fortress
Quite likely has very little actual use: it would be more cost-effective to just get some legendary soldiers in full adamantine
Also would probably be difficult to use
Perhaps difficult to aim
Construction and operation will both, quite likely, end up with dead dwarves
A small miscalculation in the construction may end up with your fortress flooded with magma, or water, or both
Needs clearing the target site

The last one may be a problem: if one attempts to clear the target area while still operating the weapon, miners may be lost.

What are we waiting for?

You're forgetting one last thing:
The only real way to to make it an auto-clearing system is to dig down into the depths of the ground around you for each and every spot where the Cave-ins occur.
Which has several problems, the primary being that on the way to dig down, you're almost assured to unleash fun, discover Adamantine, lose Miners to random creatures, or all three.
The secondary being the amount of time it takes to create.

In fact (for the third time), you can make it infinitely repeatable with no resetting of the drop zone by simply digging a hole under the drop zone that goes all the way to the magma sea. Any item or cave-in that touches semi-molten rock is instantly destroyed.

Well, in case you want to make it possible to drop obsidian on multiple spots, the shafts will take up a lot of space.

Less then you'd think.
One space in the middle with eight spaces surrounding it is the minimum.
