Dwarf Fortress in Vue Weekly
« on: April 07, 2008, 12:22:00 am »

It's not PCGamer or the NYTimes, but my hometown street mag, Vue Weekly has a short, madly exasperated tribute to Dwarf Fortress. You can forgive the writer - he just learned how to get irrigation up and running.

Looks wonderful! The last phrase unravels a very important truth about DF - a large part of it's magic is rooted in it's barely graphical presentation. If these dwarves were animated in depth-mapped, 16×AA-ed, 1600×1200 pixel glory, I daresay we'd get bored with the game in a week. Nobody tells me how my dwarves look! That's up to my imagination to say!

Heyyyyy... Edmontonian.

I never actually read VUE weekly because I thought it was some sort of tabloid.

It has to be a somewhat recent version, because there is a mention of relationship...that was added somewhat recently. However, he might be playing an old one, but got two married immigrants.

Another Edmontonian, here!  :D Can't say I've ever read Vue, either, though.  Metro, yes, but only because they're handed out at LRT stations. . .

I used to read Vue for the Bob the Angry Flower comic strips:

It's gotten weird in recent years, but some of the old strips were classic.

Well, I'm all for a better interface to DF.  As long as all the simulation elements are intact, good or bad graphics don't affect me.  But I think any compromises in gameplay to give the graphics more horsepower would be in poor taste.

Good article
