Rivers are an element of water. Water extinguishes fire.

Thread over.

Does that look like an elf god to you?!?!

Rivers hold the Carp, which is the most fiercesome beast alive!

They also allow wounded dwarves to survive.

See, the power of life AND death. Magma only holds death and destruction. Rivers can be destructive, but they can also be beneficial too, like when they are harnessed for endless power or when they give you farmland!

I'm going to go with rivers. They bring life and a menagerie of interesting creatures like freshwater stingrays, carp, and lamprey.  I remember once I lost a fisherdwarf to a lamprey. I imagine the lamprey just latched onto his face with that barbed sucker and dragged him under.

Fire holds the secrets of forging, which is how we dwarves defend ourselves.

It also can be used for deadly traps to destroy our enemies.

Magma holds the power of both DEFENSE and ATTACK. Only water is absolute, while Magma covers the grey areas between. One can live without water, provided soil exists. One finds it much more difficult to live well without Magma.

Fire!

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in rivers.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction rivers
Are also great
And would suffice.

Apologies to Robert Frost.

DWARWEN POETRY!
 :D

I'll have to conter that...

deep in the river
the carp silent lurks
waiting and ploting
for dwarves that com near
for this is the king of the beasts that we know
the might carp lurks

the elephant widely roams
and drinks from the river
tusks that gleams in the sun
sthelt is its wepon
and size untold
for this s the king of the beasts the we know
the elephant roams

the dwarf digs away at the rock
litle does he know
the beyond thet rock
is the river

I am not a poet, that is a caricature of boring, nauesa-indusing poetry.
and that is not an exuse, it is ment to be awfull.

Heart!

By your powers combined...
I am...
A MONSTER!

And I thought it was interesting to note that the contrast has been brought up in literature, too.  Gurney Halleck, for example, in 'Dune' sang:

The Galacian Girls will do it for pearls,
And the Arakeen for water!
But if you desire dames
like consuming flames,
try a Caladanin daughter!

See?  Flames are placed above water in the tier of desired things.   Yeah, ok.  That was a stretch.

Fire is the most gay of the two elements, it's followers are flamers in both senses of the word.

Rivers are also the only kind of pool that -doesn't- have aids.

In terms of destructive power, stone beats both. A single boulder the size of a small town exterminated approx 80% of the life on earth some 65 million years ago.

This discussion is making me want to say that we should be able to build steel lavamills to power our fortresses.
