Farmer should be fine IMO, more food means everyone can do more work.
And you start with 2 profession slots, so you can take 2 professions from the start.

How about farmer/hunter? Hunter sounds fun.

Meat restores a lot more strength than fruits and grains from what I've seen, so taking farmer and hunter might end up making the former a bit redundant.

Okay, I'm travelling to Tripoli as we speak! (and reading a miner's book.)

EDIT: Didn't realise the activities happened in a que :P

Gonna head to Tripoli tonight, before that, I need to at least try and get some money/exp.

Well I took farmer/hunter, too late now I guess. Unless there's a way to get rid of one profession and replace it? Maybe I could do hunter/miner?

EDIT: Okay, I'm now hunter/miner. I guess this game takes a lot of real-life time to advance in, huh? That's gonna be tough. I generally only have time to be online for a few hours per day, all clumped in right before bed, so I won't be able to check in regularly throughout the day. I suppose that'll be a disadvantage.

You can drop a profession by clicking the drop button by it, but I'm not sure if that drops the profession or the slot, but I think hunters' foraging can get IQ restoring items too, so they might work fine together.
Ultimately it's up to how you want to play anyway.

This game is frustrating as hell - I'm on the Newbie Farm, how do I harvest?  Or even select specific crops to water?  All I can do is irrigate - it's the only thing that shows up on Activities on the Home page, or when I pick "New Activities" on the Activities page it insists on an Item and the Item list is blank :p   Wheat is a level 1 crop, I'm level 1, WTF is the problem?

Edit:  And after I irrigate a few times, still can't select Harvest some wanker comes in and is harvesting both the wheat plots ARRRRRGH!

I think farming works better if you 'own' the plot. While I haven't tried farming yet, you may be better off getting a farming job from the Gamemaster, if those exist. You are guaranteed money, you only have to 'work' them, even if you only produce 1 wheat because of low moral.

Click on the apple trees to water them, and harvest them.

So, I spent 13 ticks mining ore and my mining exp is still at 0, what gives?

NVM, I guess it's because I wasn't getting the ore

No matter how I click on the different farm crops, no option to Water or Harvest appears.  So, I go back to NewbYork and find that now there's jobs for the watering and harvesting, so I take those and fly back to the farm - now, by selecting Work on those jobs I can get a Water/Harvest task - still no way to do it through the Farm display page or the Activities page.

Yes there is a soldier profession, and a spy profession, both require a governmental library though.

Also, back in Libya now, starting exploring now.
