Frozenvictims 2.0 - Terrifying Glacier succession fort
« on: September 07, 2011, 08:58:30 am »

Due to the sad failure of the previous thread, I decided to go ahead and remake what should be an awesome fort. Embark details coming soon.

All right! Frozenvictims 2.0, succession fort is starting!

Terrifying tundra and haunted glacier, all civs, soil, shallow and deep metals, flux and an aquifer layer which thankfully only extends to the upper half of the map.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

After long months of travel, we have finally arrived! I think. I may have read that map wrong... Because this is really not a nice seaside. Thankfully, the others were never told what our destination was. The king demands loyalty, not wisdom. Or some fucking intelligence for that matter. I'm a bloody miner, what on the Enchanted Ass did he expect from a miner? We better start making ourselves a home before a blizzard comes.

This is a community fort right?  Dorf me as a battleaxe swinging ( woodcutting and military axe ) lunatic named Nix.

EDIT: JUST IN CASE I DIDN'T MAKE IT CLEAR, I DON'T WANT A TURN.

If I go into civs mode and one race has a red line next to them on embark, does it mean they'll come or that they won't?

Well, I'd still like a turn somewhere in here, and a dwarf (Butcher, dissector, and/or surgeon).

So, we've got a pre-existing war?  Who is it with?

As soon as we began digging into the mountainside for fear of beasts far fucking worse than the elk we've seen, I found damp stone. After inspecting the surroundings, I believe this is an Armok-damned aquifer.

Nirmek bless me, this will be some tough son of a fort to establish!

After having excavated some farm space, for fuck knows what plant will grow, I'm not a farmer, a deadly blizzard came. I had to order everyone inside because they don't have the fucking brains not to stand in the open and freeze like a snowdwarf.

We have tried breaching the aquifer, but with no mechanisms to make stone, some useless cocksucker would have to sacrifice themselves. But what with such an enclosed space, those bastards started socialising. Me, I only like this other miner fella. He seems the right dwarfy stock. I decided to check South if we can perhaps avoid the aquifer.

This place is the worst I've ever seen. Nirmek fucking damn them, why did they put ME, of all people, in charge of the map? Bloody idiots. The blizzard raged for a month and a half before finally stopping. It started again after a week. Damn this place.

Stone! We have struck claystone! This is some very good news! With a bit of luck, we'll be able to dig down through the aquifer with this.

Damn it! I found damp stone while mining but I assumed it was from the aquifer layer above us. I was wrong. THis shit is bloody 4 levels deep! I don't think we can breach that. I hope our bloody carpenter can wall that section off before it flushes us out like some fucking rats from a sewer! Thankfully, the water levels rise fairly slowly. If we consider a cheetah slow.

Summer arrived, and while that aquifer is proving to be a real tough challenge, I think the fort is doing fairly well. Except for the fact most people are friends. Nirmek damn their arses.

OOC: I have utterly no idea what's going on. I keep on designating areas to be dug out as staircases, but dwarves simply mine it out! I ordered both our camel and our yak slaughtered, but nobody is moving to do anything, so those both starved. Nearly everyone has butchery enabled. Random cave-in happens from converting up/down stairways to down stairways even though there is a support supposedly holding the whole place up. We're currently in mid-summer, but at this rate we won't get far.

I was right about Meng, the fellow miner. Real dwarfy stock, that lad, already got herself some fair lass.

Nirmek damn this place! An unexpected cave-in caused grievous injuries to Meng! His liver! Unfortunately, with his liver bruised he can't drink alcohol, and I sure won't fucking dig out another cave-in possible batch of ice just to get him water!

Great. Some random glacier hillbillies asked to enter the fort. I told them to go fuck themselves, we're keeping the booze to ourselves. They still managed to somehow sneak in. One of them claims to be capable of performing all sorts of things, mostly useless. But he'll be good for a farmer.

Hmm.. I wonder what the fuck is wrong with this place. I carve a beatiful staircase out, but when I finish it disappears! I must investigate whatever the fuck this is. What if I do thi... AAAH!

Now that's just fucking great. Instead of getting to rest like every normal dead dwarf should, I have to stay around and guide these cocksuckers, but I'm telling you that's damn impossible when nobody is willing to do any work. I like to imagine myself as a big, yellow cross. Mainly because I sure as fuck wouldn't listen to a big yellow cross, and neither do they.

.

OOC: Any ideas on how to solve the problems?

Are you sure you're not digging the staircase into the aquifer, which then immediately freezes?

I'd probably try exploratory digging under our other biome.  Get under the aquifer until we have the resources to use it properly

It happened down south too, but I will now try digging in the southwest. By now, I mean when I get home.

PFP: That is what I tried during spring, but did not expect the aquifer to be four levels deep.

I am afraid I will have to savescum because nobody has any skills in mining and they refuse to take up a pick. I have save from the end of spring. What do you say?
