Drinking from murky pools

ok, it's mid winter in my fort, all the water is frozen over, and we are out of booze. all i have is a murky pool. how do i get them to drink it? i tried making a water source activity zone on a tile adjacent to the pool, but it won't work. any ideas?

If all the water is frozen over, then I would expect the murky pool to also be frozen over.  In which case, dwarves can't drink from it.

Dig down to your first cavern. There's probably some water down there.
