Definitely baited punji traps.

In fact, I'm a proponent of digging them throughout the forest around the old cabin. Later we can put cages inside some, and tame/sell what those catch. I'm willing to bet that some of the hides will fetch top yollar, too.

As a plus, they might also trap a few of the baddies on their way to the village at night. We should probably put up signs, though... having "migrants" or other passerby falling in would be pretty messed up.

Punji traps require less maintence, and keep working no matter what.

Soon as we get sinew, im voting for a trap that flings a spear at you once you trip a "wire", thereby stabbing you from beneath.

Edit: We need to get some animal by-product facilities up quick, so that we dont waste any precious animal products.
Bone glue making stuff, tanning tubs, drying racks.
Anything good would be nice!

I second this. If we plane a log, we should be able to make the tubs rather quickly.

We have plenty of planks, just line the inside with wet clay and that will be fine for a tanning tub. Drying racks can be made from sticks and we have clay tubs for making glue.

Also, we don't need spears and sinew to make a spring trap, we just need springy branches and sticks, tie sharpened stakes to a spring of twined springy branches and fasten this in cover somewhere, and bend the branch back. It's good for trapping animals and making booby traps. We can also do the same thing with a standing tree and instead of stakes, we can make a noose of some kind that whips victims into the air when triggered.

So, who are we designating to trap the Hades out of the forest? Begin woodsman training on one of the peasants!

We can't train the peasants, or so word on the street is.

Franz would make the perfect woodsman. You know, because he's French.

We can just have our woodcutter make them by himself, with perhaps the help of a single worker. That's the great thing about these simple traps, they are pretty easy to make and set up, plus we don't need more than one other woodcutter right now.

Deep Forest:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hans and Rex are now deeper into the forest. They have found a sign that reads:

Blackwood Cave ahead
Do not enter

From this sign they guess that this forest may be "Blackwood" and remark on what a cliche the name is (although it does make sense considering what goes on at night).

Village:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In return for refusing trade with the West Bogshire Trading Company you will recive a flat 20% discount on all goods and a 50% discount on all services. A runner will arrive later in the day to allow you time to think the offer through. They also give the village a Jaian pack as a token of friendship.

They are also here to trade.

Also, how much tidal action does that body of water see? If there's enough, we could try to build one of there.
