Why can't I use my weapon? it's all greyed out (newbie question)

So I'm fairly new to DF and I'm playing in Lazy Newb Pack. so far I'm on my way to kill some boss, and on the way there I'm killing every animal I come across to improve my skills. after killing some I realized I can no longer use my sword of shield in combat, when I go to the inventory screen their greyed out.

are they broken or something?

No, it means that they are held in your hand. I was a bit confused with this when I started my first adventure, too, so don't feel bad.
