Waterfalls and frostbite?
« on: October 05, 2011, 03:35:35 pm »

My fort is on a hill in the frozen tundra. A probe checks the temperature at 9991 Degrees-Urist. I can make ice walls (yay project for later).

Question: I usually put a waterfall in my dining room that showers dorfs as they enter. If I do this will dorfs have frostbite when they walk outside?
Second question: If dorfs get frostbite from this setup, and I set up showers for goblins, will they get frostbite? Is frostbite deadly enough to warrant the trouble?

I think the water can and will freeze over your dwarfs. Being mummified in ice is way way way WAY worse than getting frostbite. (though it does allow archeologists to examine your perfectly preserved body/gear better 5000 years after having been mummified in the ice)

Water won't freeze if you place it deep enough. Dwarves can't have frostbite.

If you are worried about frostbite, just cut off all of their fingers and toes.

I don't know if you need other ideas when you have magma.

Just make the waterfall deeper than normal and it won't freeze.

A magmafall sounds nice, but dwarves aren't that excited about it :\

Its underground, so it wont freeze. What I am worrying about is soaking wet dwarves going outside with 'water covering' on them and it turning to ice, freezing their parts off. I noticed once in a seasonal temperate map when I was mining out a murky pool in autumn, the water got everywhere. It then turned into winter, and all the dorfs exposed to the air immediately got SEVERE frost bite and lost numerous digits.

Have I posed a query on something no one has ever experimented with before? Then my mission is now clear. I shall build the frostbite trap, for !!SCIENCE!!

I shall take a section of my hill. Route water pipes into it and a tunnel. Water will cascade across the hall. Anything entering it will get soaked. Then the tunnel opens up to the cold air. Anything that walks through will get wet, then hopefully when it walks out of the tunnel, get frostbite.

Dwarfs can have frostbite, but it's rarely fatal. ‼SCIENCE‼ needs to be performed on this to see if it can be weaponized. I suggest using elf merchants as test subjects.

Everything doesn't always need to be fatal....so if frostbite removes enough fingers, does that mean the creatures can no longer wield weapons? How many working fingers are needed to hold shields and weapons? Provided this fort doesn't meet some tragic end beforehand,I shall see what I can find out.
