I lost one...
« on: October 04, 2011, 03:45:23 pm »

I recently managed to take out a child snatcher skulking around my fortress, but I later found out he'd already gotten his hands on a child. He didn't leave the map before my military got to him, but I can't find the kid anywhere. The parents list the kid on their relationship screens, but she can't be found with the other units. Oddly, on the profile page I got to via the relationship screen, she's not dead and has the thought "happy to be free"

Can I get her back?

The kid is gone.  If you got the message that a child had been stolen, it means the goblin thief had already left the map.  The goblin you killed wasn't the kidnapper, it was a different goblin who you didn't kill who did it.

When a child is kidnapped, they stay on the Units screen, aren't dead, is still listed on relationship screens, and gets the 'happy to be free' thought.  But they're still never coming back to your fortress.

But they're still never coming back to your fortress.

Sadly, not even as a "goblin" sieger.  that would be awesome.

I have to wonder, do you think the "happy to be free" thought comes from be taken out of the bag, or from being freed from the fortress?

Sweet baby jesus, it all makes sense now...

The goblins aren't the monster, we are.

They send in teams to try and kill off adults, and save children before they're fully assimilated. So that they can at least have a few survive after they wipe the place clean with sieges.

Dwarves rape the land, slaughter en masse, have corrupt governments, and have little care for anything but themselves, and they don't even care about themselves that much.

The goblins are attempting to save the world, from dwarves.

Unfortunately, the dwarven child disappears from history,as well as the goblin that snatched it. I imagine that this is dwarf fortress's way of saying...

Actually if I recall, you can find the child in the Legends screen and sometimes they can actually go off and do things. I think. I seem to remember a LP of some child being kidnapped in Fortress mode and then found in Adventurer mode.

I may be imagining it all. I tend to do that with DF a lot.

Did you see the 'dwarven child care' thread?

Goblins aren't stealing children.  They're rescuing them.

The child could be having a happy thought for leaving your fortress and escaping a life of toiling in the heat of the forges and alcholism, if you look in the raws a baby snathcher will tell you(in adventure mode hypothetically)
"I rescued lost children"
The Goblins are really saving the dwarves from themselves.
