Oh no! We're passing into a portion of space where alien light particles make suns explode!

This has got to be one of the lamest apocalypses we've run into yet. What's next, cheeseburger apocalypse?

Nope.

So the news is saying that the aurora borealis was seen as far south as Alabama monday and there is a good chance it'll be seen again due to unusually high solar activity.

Just in time for the stupid 2012 doomsday thing too. Well, anybody have tips on how to prepare your home for the battle with Satan's Army or whatever?
The Mayans believed that their civilization was made and unmade 3 times, 2012 is just another unmaking/remaking a new beginning, it has nothing to do with the end of the world at all.
So the Mayans shall rise again?

Woo, a massless, chargeless field boson that doesn't do anything than mediate electromagnetic forces and cause light. My fermions are shaking.

Or maybe that's just the superstrings.

This thread has now been derailed into a discussion about quantum physics.

And now a nice image.

Both their descendants and pieces of their culture are still around...maybe, by some strange chance, such people will band together for a while. Perhaps it will be a result of so many people grouping together, thinking it's the end of the world, or partying because it seems like the doomsayers offer a good excuse.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

I'm no trekkie, but didn't they do that all the time?

There was a certain episode where there was some sort of massive slowdown (IIRC it was supposed to be the quantum space doohickey of the week donig something or other) which made that line last for a substantial length of time. I wasn't able to dig up a link to a video, unfortunately. It because somewhat of a joke between myself and a few people I know.

Turn and turn about?
