green eyed white undead cave dragon
« on: August 03, 2014, 03:08:09 pm »

So this is in 0.34.11 but so what.  I embarked to a beautiful granite spire jutting out of a flat tundra.  The place rains horrid filth that dents dwarves, and everything animates as undead.

After rather a lot of terribleness, and leaving almost all my supplies outside, I finally got going, and constructed an undead smashing hallway to try to clear out some of the 258 undead on the map.  It was working well until an undead cave dragon showed up and instead of getting atom smashed, the bridge smashed instead.

I had redundant failsafes and so survived that surprise, but what am i going to do about it?  I can't smash it, and a military won't work either because it both reanimates and is super fierce, and its a building destroyer so the traps that wouldn't kill it anyway will just get destroyed instead.  I need a trick.

You could try crushing him with a cave-in. Bonus points if you manage to knock him into a cage trap instead.

Be careful.  I've had living breathing cave dragons hit dwarves hard enough to punt them across the entire 20-some-odd-tiles-wide cavern.  To explode into tasty dwarf bits on the far wall.

Being undead makes them even stronger and nastier.  You should be thankful that cave dragons can't fly so a cave-in trap is safe to attempt as many times as you need to.

Far as I recall they aren't immune to traps... if they aren't, a cage trap on its own will work fine.  Don't risk your fortress on that though, better to just check the raws (I can't where I'm at right now), once that thing gets into your fortress, you're probably doomed.

A platform held up by supports that he can wander onto? you can make a pit for him to live in, put a platform on top surrounded by grates(or bridges? idk how support works) and held up by a support, and he'll wanter onto the platform, smash the support, and fall however deep you made the pit. You might be able to cage him this way(the cage traps might be smashed by falling floors, but who knows), but you'll certainly be able to exploit him for profit/marksdwarf practice.

For what it's worth, atom smashers only work on baddies up to a certain size/building destroyers. Check the wiki, I'm not sure what the check is based on. Retracting bridges won't retract if a Troll or whatever is sitting on it.

Minor correction: trolls can get bridgesmashed, but ogres can't.

Cave dragons are definitely trappable, so a cage trap should fix it, OP.

Well i'll try my hand at cage trapping the 208 undead still on the map.  Problem is that i can't go outside and that's where the wood is.  i got like 18 logs, so i'll have to figure out how to recycle my cages.  It would be fun to have caged undead cave dragons in the dining room...

Valuable! You can pit them, but that's kind of buggy ATM, so don't do that without failsafes. Several failsafes.

I managed to cage 15 undead cave dragons and cave ogres by bribing them with nice doors to destroy.  However, now i'm out of wood and there's still infinite undead out there.  i need a new trick...

Cages can be made from a lot of stuff. Dig down to magma and make some out of whatever crap metal youve got, lead, nickel, tin, whatever.

At least for now, critters cant break out of cages. Thatll change in the future
