Speaking of commanders, w can't deny a definite id classic: Commander Keen.

Those were fun games.

DS stopped remaking the same game a few years ago.

He's now committing financial suicide by making a highly ambitious MMO

Were fun when i first played them back in the days, are always fun when played now thanks to DOSBox :
- Aces of the Deep , always interesting subsim one of the first that actually had 3D models for the surrounding boats, too bad the resolution was really low (much lower than Silent Hunter) making it a pain at trying to identify anything at long distance, the Command version that was coded for window (and so sadly not playable through DOSBox) have much better resolution and is unplayable on anything more recent than window ME.

- Carrier Command, it was amazing in its time, and now even despite the visuals have stayed very simple, the gameplay is always very good, and the sandboxy feeling in how you conquer the island gives a good replayability.

- Daggerfall, simply always great, the only bad point was how repetitive the billions of giant "random" dungeon (that were not that random but made from some tiles re-arranged differently) were, while the unique dungeons had their own design with much more challenging difficulty than what dungeon exploration was in Morrowind or Oblivion.

- Arena, while Daggerfall had exterior that only made you wanting to just use the fast travel, as there was nothing worthy to see and everything just felt randomly spawned arount, Arena surprisingly had much better exteriors despite being older.

-Darklands, go play it, while the battle have very low resolution and could have been much better in term of balancing regarding the equipment, the illustrations and dialogues around the whole game builds an atmosphere you don't find in other games, it's brillant and very freeform (despite there's always some missions too) allowing lot of replayability.

- Heroes of Might and Magic II , there was a window version in the re-release of it, but the original one was for DOS and can always eat countless hours of your free time when run through DOSBox , be carefull :D

- Master of Magic; deserve all the praise you can read around every board that discuss this masterpiece. Worth noticing that there is an unofficial patch from last year fixing lots of unresolved long standing problems.

- Master of Orion 1&2 , both are extremely good and because they have a very different gameplay they are both worth playing, one does not replace the other. MoO1 has a coffee breaker feel too (can be misleading as games can be long on large universe) making it ideal for quick play, MoO2 with its superior graphic featured a very different battle system more in par with wargaming.
Just play both they're that good on their own.

- Red Storm Rising, while it's more than 20 years old game, and so have the very low quality visual you can imagine, this game is always plain amazing, it featured a breakgrounding dynamic campaign in its time and more importantly for today, the battles have a very balanced chess-like feeling that make them very interesting to play even if you're not usually fan of naval games.

- XCom UFO Defense, again another masterpiece that deserves all the praise wrote about it, that first game was my favorite of all the serie, it got the atmosphere and setting right, what i didn't liked in the sequel or the urban only 3rd of the serie.
Always very challenging and interesting to replay.

- Settlers 2, not for everybody due to the very slow pace (though it's possible to accelerate time by pressing V , or by using DOSBox "Speedlock" key in the keyboard mapper (CTRL+F1) but even with those it is very slow paced ) , but if you like management and this kind of game it's one of the best, spent hours on this personally

Both of those games didn't age very well...

I love them both mind you but Tyrian is as easy as eating pie if you know how to play and OMF is too simplistic and blocky and slow today.

They arn't gems that IMO hold up. Well ok MAYBE Tyrian.

If you think Tyrian is easy you obviously haven't found to codes to unlock the higher difficulty levels yet ;)
